Restoration

Restoration cleaning of memorials is highly specialised and has to be done with great care. We have mastered this art over generations.

This involves the cleaning of stone and bringing back its original lustre. Special tools are required in this process involving sandblasting, sanding and in some cases removal of grime and diluted acid which you can see in these before/after photos.

This work must be carried out with great care as certain processes can be too severe on the stone. We in the Mount Jerome Monumental Company have many decades of experience in this field and are very proud of our own finished work time after time.

Restoration work also involves the cleaning and renewal of lettering which may have faded over twenty to thirty years. In some cases the lettering may need to be recut and this is done by hand using very sharp chisels and a lump-hammer.

Most headstones during the early and mid 20th century were lettered by hand and lead was then beaten into them which gave a much longer life-span, but after many years this lead will eventually fall out and thus needs to be re-leaded.

This work again is highly specialised and has to be done with great care. We have mastered this art over generations.
